A Warm-Up Drive Before Your DMV Test: What Happens and Who It Helps

A warm-up drive is time behind the wheel of the car you'll test in, in the hour before your California behind-the-wheel test. This guide explains what happens during it, who it tends to help, and what it can't do for you. It's what our Test + Boost package adds to a standard test-day rental.

What happens in the hour before your test

With Test + Boost, your driver meets you at the DMV office an hour before your appointment. You spend about 55 minutes together, roughly in this order:

• Getting set in the car. Seat, mirrors, pedals, and where every control is, before you move.
• Driving the streets around the office. You drive, and your driver gives you feedback as you go.
• Adjusting while there's time. If something keeps coming up, like a rolling stop or a late head check, you work on it before the test, not after.
• Check-in support. You park, check in together, and your driver hands over the vehicle's registration and proof of insurance for the examiner to review.

Then the examiner gets into a car you've already been driving for most of an hour.

This is a warm-up drive, not a driving lesson. It won't teach someone to drive who can't yet. If you're not ready to drive safely, book lessons with a licensed driving school first and schedule your test once you are.

Who it tends to help

The customers who book it usually fall into one of these situations:

• You learned to drive in another country, and US roads, signs or right-of-way habits still feel unfamiliar.
• You haven't driven much lately, or it's been a while since you practiced.
• You've never sat in a car like the one you'll test in.
• You get nervous, and you'd rather spend the last hour driving than waiting.

If you drive every week in a car much like ours, Test Only may be all you need. Your driver meets you 10 minutes before your test, walks you through the car, and helps you check in.

What the test looks at

A warm-up drive gives you time to practice those skills in the car and the area where you'll test. It doesn't give you the route. Test routes are chosen by the DMV examiner and can change, and nobody outside the DMV can tell you exactly where you'll go.

What we can and can't say about results

Across more than 400 Test + Boost customers since August 2025, 75% passed their DMV test. We measure that from the pass or fail each driver records after every appointment.

That figure describes past customers. It isn't a promise. Results depend on your driving performance, eligibility, documentation, traffic conditions, examiner decisions, and other circumstances outside our control.

The car and the paperwork

Every booking includes a test-ready car with an automatic transmission, its current registration and proof of insurance, and a licensed California driver who stays with you. Before the drive begins, the examiner checks the car against the DMV's pre-drive checklist. We prepare the car for that check, and final acceptance is determined by the DMV examiner.

Test + Boost is $369. Test Only is $249. Both are compared side by side on our pricing page. You'll need a valid California instruction permit and a confirmed behind-the-wheel test appointment before you send a booking request. Nothing is charged until we confirm a driver for your date.
